It seems like everyone wants to live longer these days. But a recent survey found that Americans are no longer just looking for ways to live longer: they want to be healthier while doing so. In a poll of 2,200 American adults, Medtronic and Morning Consult asked participants if they would prefer to live a shorter, healthier life or a longer life with health issues. The results show that 62% agree or partly agree with feeling concerned that they won't be as healthy or will be in pain if they live a longer life. The actions that people say they're taking to increase their lifespan are eating healthy, exercising and taking preventative health measures.

By 2054, there will be an estimated 422,000 Americans age 100 and older — more than four times the 101,000 in 2024, according to a Pew Research Center analysis of U.S. Census Bureau data. What's more, the centenarian population has nearly tripled in the last three decades alone, according to Pew. Among the best ways to hedge against outliving one's savings is by working longer, according to retirement experts. That may be more necessary as employers have offloaded responsibility for retirement savings onto workers' shoulders, by shifting from pensions to 401(k)-type retirement plans. "People need to be prepared to work longer," he said.

As a longevity researcher, I've spent the past 20 years studying the habits of people who live to 100 years old or longer, particularly the foods they eat. And in a tucked-away corner of Nicoya, Costa Rica, I may have found the world's healthiest breakfast. They stoke wood fires in clay ovens, put cauldrons of spicy beans to boil, and mix corn dough with wood ash. The beans cook slowly for about an hour to tender perfection and are then mixed with rice. Add water and stir until a soft dough forms (if the mixture won't form a soft ball of dough, add warm water in one tablespoon increments until it will).

“Farewell, old friend of the Chinese people,” said a top comment with thousands of likes. In July 1971, Kissinger became the first high-ranking US official to visit Communist China. Long after Kissinger left office, Beijing had regarded the well-connected diplomat as a potential helping hand in navigating the increasingly hawkish views towards China in Washington. State broadcaster CCTV called him a “living fossil” who witnessed the development of US-China relations. The tectonic shift in US-China relations that was formalized some eight years later opened the door for extensive economic engagement starting from the early 1980s.

Mebane began working as an "elevator girl" at the Mayer & Schmidt department store in 1949 when she was just 17 years old, through a work-study program at Tyler High School. So it makes sense that Binance, the world’s largest crypto exchange, has agreed to pay a $4.3 billion fine for anti-money laundering, effortlessly surpassing penalties paid by miscreant financial firms that have been around for more than a century longer. Binance boss Changpeng Zhao, a kingpin of crypto and the man who precipitated the downfall of bankrupt rival FTX, pleaded personally guilty on Tuesday to criminal violations. HSBC (HSBA.L), (0005.HK) in 2012 agreed to pay $1.9 billion for its role in facilitating drug cartels’ money laundering. It’s a tricky thing to write a crotchety old person, and pretty soon the reader wonders what sort of redeeming qualities will make it desirable to spend time in Eugene’s presence. “Well, imagine being young,” he explains. Eugene begins the novel in self-confinement, hiding away in his room doing jigsaw puzzles, but Angel has a charm that slowly wins over the grouch. Angel gives him nicknames, like calling Eugene “homie,” “dog” and “Geno,” much to his chagrin; and he urges the old man to leave his bubble. Eventually Eugene’s reserve cracks, and he agrees to lunch at an outdoor picnic table, where he begins to tell Angel the story of his life.
